To those involved with animal rescue Spring is a season that brings more than flowers, grass and sunshine, it brings kitten season. A time of year when PAWS relies heavily on donations and volunteers to handle the incredible strain the influx of animals places on our resources. Last year PAWS cared for hundreds of homeless cats and dogs, especially kittens. We facilitated the spay/neutering of close to 6,000. Please find it in your heart to make a donation, contribution or volunteer, and help PAWS continue our life-saving programs. Your support will literally save the lives of thousands of animals.
Today, we are poised on setting new goals and forging new collaborations for the betterment of all -- animals, indivdiuals, rescue groups, and shelters. This year we have come to the realization that yes, we can bring about a more humane community. For the first time, a rescue group and shelter are collaborating to offer spay/neuter for feral cats to the public with PAWS offering spay/neuter clinics for feral cats at the Humane Society of the Harrisburg Area, along with a new program in Swatara. PAWS is also planning a Cat Management Forum featuring Alley Cat Allies on August 23rd.
Read below to find out about the many ways you can help PAWS help homeless animals. And, when you get a chance, please stop by and check out our new website.
Sincerely,

Kathy C. Smith

Cat Overpulation Tackled in Swatara
The Humane Society of Harrisburg Area, Inc. (HSHA) and PAWS have partnered to offer a low-cost feral cat spay/neuter program for residents of Swatara Township. The first clinic was held March 17 at the Swatara Township Municipal Building, 599 Eisenhower Boulveard, Harrisburg.
The clinic is intended to reduce the reproduction of feral, or wild, cats in Swatara Township, where a large population of feral cats currently exists. Surgeries were performed by Keystone Veterinary Services. Each cat was spayed or neutered, vaccinated, tested for feline leukemia and feline immunodeficiency viruses, receive a post-operative antibiotic, and parasite treatment.
"We are very excited to partner with PAWS and Swatara Township to offer yet another line of defense against feral cat overpopulation in our area" said Amy Kaunas, executive director of HSHA.
"It will take a combined effort of all of us working together -- individuals, rescues, shelters, the community -- in order to successfully control the feral and stray cat overpopulation via the only proven method -- trap-neuter-return (TNR). This collaboration between a rescue organization (PAWS), a shelter (HSHA), and municipal government (Swatara Township) is the beginning of our communities working together to humanely control animal overpopulation." said Kathy Smith, President of PAWS.
Both the Humane Society of Harrisburg Area, Inc. and PAWS are nonprofit 501 (c) 3 organizations. For more information on the HSHA, please call Kelly Hitz at 717-564-3320, ext 110 or email kellyh@humanesocietyhbg.org. For more information on PAWS, please call 717-957-8122 or visit their website at www.pawsofpa.org.
Future clinics are being planned, stay tuned for more details.

Highlighteed Pet: Chester - Lap Lover
Chester is a TNR success story turned Foster & Adoption Happy Ending in the making. Chester was found living on the streets of Palmyra and was humanely trapped and neutered. He put on the charm and showed what a sweet boy he is and allowed PAWS volunteers to discover his front paw was injured due to what appeared to be a chemical burn. To round off his illnesses Chester also had an ear infection and bladder infection. It became obvious that Chester was not a candidate to be returned to outside living. With lots of love, tender care and many many vet visits later, he is now ready to find his own family. Chester is approximately 8 years old and is truly a lap cat. He loves people both young and old and doesn't want to share that affection with another kitty; he prefers his solitude to bask in the glory showered upon him. Chester is a playful and loveable and as mentioned earlier loves to pass the time on a persons lap - Chester, King of Laps. He is neutered, current on vaccinations and has a microchip ID and tested negative for leukemia/FIV. For more information or to arrange to meet Chester, please email info@pawsofpa.org Application process and adoption fee required.
